Realism Tiger Tattoo for Carolina Tiger Rescue (Design 4)

Durham tattoo artist Brian Parrillo has completed the first of four charity tiger tattoos donated for International Tiger Day 2026, raising money for Carolina Tiger Rescue, a GFAS-accredited wildcat sanctuary in Pittsboro, NC. The piece is a black and grey realism tiger portrait — Design 4 from the four pre-drawn designs offered through the promotion — tattooed on the inner forearm of returning client Christie.

The event was originally planned as two donation-based tattoos, but demand for all four designs was strong enough that Brian doubled the offer, donating all four pre-drawn tiger designs instead of two. Tattoos were completed August 21–22, 2026 at Ethereal Tattoo Gallery in downtown Durham, and this post is the first in a series featuring each completed piece.

About the Tattoo

Christie's tiger is a close-cropped portrait, done in the realism style Brian has spent over a decade refining: the fine texture of fur along the brow, the dimension in the eye, whiskers rendered fine enough that they seem to catch light off the skin. It's placed on the inner forearm — a spot Brian and the Ethereal team frequently recommend for portrait work, since the flat, relatively unmarked canvas holds detail well and ages nicely over time.

Christie is a returning client and already has another tiger tattoo, so this piece adds to an existing collection rather than starting one. When she applied for the fundraiser, she shared why tigers matter to her:

"Having volunteered at the St. Francis Wolf Sanctuary in Texas, I've seen firsthand the intense dedication it takes to run a sanctuary and provide rescued animals with a safe, enriching environment where they can actually thrive. That experience deeply rooted my respect for wildlife, especially tigers, which have always been my favorite animal. To me, there is nothing more magnificent than a big cat that balances striking beauty with quiet stealth and immense power. They demand absolute respect. Being chosen to add to my tiger tattoo collection would be incredibly meaningful, representing both my hands-on respect for wildlife conservation and my awe for these powerful animals."

Why Carolina Tiger Rescue

Brian has been tattooing animal portraits for more than 11 years, and big cats are a subject he keeps returning to — the challenge of fur texture, the weight of a gaze, the way light moves across whiskers is exactly the kind of technical problem his black and grey realism style is built for. So when it came time to plan a second charity tattoo event, a big cat sanctuary was the natural next step.

Carolina Tiger Rescue is a nonprofit wildcat sanctuary in Pittsboro, about 45 minutes from downtown Durham. It's one of the only GFAS-accredited big cat sanctuaries in the country, meaning it's held to the highest industry standards for animal care. The animals living there come from private ownership situations, roadside zoos, and facilities shut down by authorities — and every one of them gets a lifelong home designed to mimic their natural habitat, with no breeding programs, no cub petting, and no exploitation.

Clients were selected for the event based on placement fit, scheduling flexibility, and design match. Instead of paying Brian or Ethereal, each made a direct, tax-deductible donation to Carolina Tiger Rescue. Together, the four tattoos raised $2,800 for the sanctuary in honor of International Tiger Day 2026. Other Charitable Tattoo Events

This wasn't Brian's first donation-based tattoo event, and it won't be his last. In 2025, he ran a similar promotion for Hope Animal Rescue, a Durham nonprofit focused on rescuing dogs — many of them pit bulls — from difficult situations. What started as an offer of two donation-based pet portrait tattoos turned into four, after the campaign drew more than 70 submissions and hundreds of pet photos. That event raised over $3,200 for Hope Animal Rescue.

‍The Hope Animal Rescue fundraiser got picked up by the Raleigh News & Observer, which interviewed Brian and Ethereal's shop manager, Annika, about the project and the community response: Pet tattoos offered at discount rate in Durham charity event aimed at dog shelter. Between the two campaigns, Brian and Ethereal have now helped raise over $6,000 for local animal welfare organizations through donation-based tattoo work alone!
